Whirligig beetle -
Size - 3 mm long
See them - March onwards
First spotted in March 2011, they scoot rapidy about on the water surface, in a  seemingly random fashion, giving them their name, and making them easy to recognise.

Actually they are half on the water and half under the water, they can dive under the water, and adults have wings, under the hard wing case, and can fly, which is how they got to the pond.
