A group of insects that are very common in gardens and in the reserve, the photographs show three type seen on one day, but there are many more.
A their name implies they can hover in mid air, and dart about in their search for nectar which they feed upon.
Many of them resemble wasps and bees, and can be confused with them.
They are beneficial to the gardner as their young eat aphids and other garden pests.
